CHOPPED!!!!

So, I got my hair totally chopped off! This is not the best picture, but I have been too lazy to load a decent one. I wanted to donate my hair to locks of love or something of the like, but because I had bleach highlights at one point and it wasn't all grown out, I couldn't donate it because of the chemicals they use to treat the hair when they make the wigs. Anyhow, it's cut! And IT'S SHORT!! I am liking it more with each passing day! That's about all for us right now!

Eighty, Eighty, What a Lady!!

The kids and I were fortunate enough to be able to go spend about 10 days with my Grannie. We went to celebrate her 80th Birthday with her. Once I got there, my uncle told me they had been planning a surprise birthday celebration and putting together a scrapbook for her. I got busy and did my part to help out. It turned out to be a huge success mostly because my uncle, aunt, and cousins had already been working hard ordering cakes and getting the invitation out to all that could come. The best part is, my Grannie had no idea and was completely surprised! She kept saying, "Nobody told me!" And we kept saying, "We weren't supposed to!" hahaha!

(this is my Grannie after a long day of picking cotton in Missouri)

As I think about my Grannie, many wonderful memories come to mind. Her and my Grandpa spent many years caring for me and my brother and sisters. Our parents divorced when I was just a baby, and my dad had custody. This made him a single father of 4 who worked A LOT! That meant early morning drop offs with Grandpa and Grannie, or even spending the night with them on the regular. As I grew, I spent many days being spoiled by my Grannie. Still, as an adult, when I get sick, that's where I want to be! When I was a young teen, my grandpa got sick. The Doctors told them it was Alzheimer's. We quickly saw our brilliant hard working grandfather become someone who could just putter around the house and someone who needed my Grannie to care for him day and night. His needs consumed her, but she never seemed to mind. She has always said that Grandpa wouldn't have wanted to live that way, not knowing what he was doing, regressing in so many ways. But, she also said she never minded caring for him. It was a daunting task I don't know many who are capable of doing such a thing. But, for years, I think it was actually 9+ years that she spent feeding him, bathing him, dressing him, even changing him. The more he needed her the more she cared for him. The more she grew to love him. She still says that she knows the last years of his life he wasn't really him, but at least he was there and they could hold hands, dance and he would rub her feet. It was a forever love. She still wears his wedding band and her heart aches for his company everyday. He's been gone almost 8 years, and there is not a doubt in my mind that she misses him and I know she loves him with all of her heart just as much today as the first day they were married...probably more. Oh, and what makes it more incredible that she committed so much of her time caring for him? After he got sick, she was diagnosed with cancer and spent a good majority of his later years having surgeries. The doctors ended up cutting away a good portion of her face. She still can't close her mouth. She ended up having radiation treatments, and for now she is cancer free. Even if she wasn't, I know she's never going to trust another doctor to operate after what she's been through. I sit in amazement at this woman and all she's been through...after all the hardships and the giving, SHE STILL GIVES LOVINGLY TO OTHERS!!! What an incredible woman.

The love she has for my grandpa doesn't stop with him. I mean it's kind of expected, after all, they did spend their lives working together: running their gas station, caring for their children and grandchildren, and grieving the loss of loved ones. In their first few years of marriage, she lost a brother and they lost 2 children: my Grannie's only daughter died at birth and the twin brother 2 years later of leukemia. Shortly there after they had another son, my uncle. And shortly after him came another son, my dad. That was it in the way of kids for them, but like I said, it never stopped them from giving and caring for our family. And they now have 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren...probably more to come(not from me...hehe)! And still, to this day, if you show up on my Grannie's doorstep, she'll whip up a 10 course meal in no time and she'll be sure to serve you the sweetest tea and best candies and cookies available. There's nothing but love and hospitality coming from that woman!

I love my Grannie. She is a big contributor to who I am today, there aren't many people like her, and I am so glad I was able to celebrate such a wonderful birthday with her. If I live to be 80, I can only pray that my life is 1/2 as blessed as what hers has been! Of course, if you know her, you know she's not anywhere near the age 80, she's 29....AND HOLDING!

(This is the crew who was able to come together and celebrate in Salina, KS at my cousin's house.)

A look back in time...

I was trying to clean up our computer and take these photos and put them on disk and I got sidetracked thinking about where the time has gone...it seems like only yesterday that I was pregnant with Ashlynn and the boys were so little.

Sometimes, some days, when I look at the cute little babies in these pictures, it makes me want another...Now, if you know Travis and I, that is NOT about to happen! hahahaha! But, there's something about looking at the picture of your little tiny baby and wanting to hold them in your arms and feed them their bottle and watch them take their first steps. The first year of life is so amazing...don't get me wrong, each passing day, each passing moment is magical too. But, looking at these just made me miss my little babies! Maybe I'll bring back some more photos if you're lucky! We can remember together....It probably doesn't give you the same feeling inside as it does me to look at my sweet babies so tiny, but for a moment, I can look at these and remember what it was like when they were all so small! And, yes I know, boy am I in trouble when another 20 years has passed...But, hopefully by then I'll have grand babies to spoil! :) And that's even better than your own kids right? Because you can spoil them rotten and then send them home! :)

Oh, and PS, I can't get this layout to cooperate with me, so I am leaving it like this! :) NO chronological order, no birth order, no rhyme or reason to the way it's done...I'm surrendering to this blog the way it is....And, the OCD in me is SCREAMING....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It's time!

Well, I realized a week or so ago that I haven't blogged yet in the new year. I thought maybe it was time I got around to it.

What Can I say? We are doing well. I have really turned a corner with homeschooling. I feel more confidant we are doing the right thing for our family. I have really had to fight my OCD tendencies and RELAX! I'm getting better, but I still have my days! :) The kids still absolutely love it! We are looking into curriculum for next year already.
Travis and I have gotten out of the fantastic shape we were in when we left Germany. We weren't perfect, but were very well on our way to being to our goals. What can I say all the American convenience foods and grease filled fast food got the better of us. Along with not eating so great, we quit working out on a regular schedule...me more than him. :( Anyhow, our friend invited us to play a "diet" game with her and some other people. We began the game on Monday and so far so good. I have actually lost almost 6 pounds and Travis 10! Now, I know most of that is probably water weight. But, it still feels good to know we are getting back in the swing of things, and who knows, if we keep it up, maybe we'll win the prize at the end! :)
The kids are fantastic! This week Kalib lost tooth number 3, and number 4 is REALLY wiggly, you can look forward to a toothless smile in the next week or so! Ethan is excelling in math. He just gets it. It is so great to see his growing mind! I never cease to be amazed at what these kids are capable of! Ashlynn is recovering from being sick right now. She had a cough for about 10 days and then woke up with ear pain one morning and the cough was worse. We decided to make an appointment with the Dr. When they saw us they did a chest x-ray and looked at her ears. The conclusion was an ear infection and mild pneumonia! Poor baby. The meds are helping and 3 days later you can be assured she is fighting with her brothers!

I will close with a few pictures. These pictures aren't actually from this year! Over our Christmas break, we took a field trip to see the jets at Travis' work. And the snow ones are from our snowman building adventure from our White Christmas Week.

Last Post 2009?

Seeing how I have been such a frequent blogger the last month. NOT! This will probably be my last post of 2009. As I look back on the year, I think of all the changes that have happened in our life.

Episode 1: Wrapping up things in Germany...That took the first part of the year. I never thought we'd miss it like we do, but we do!!! I think mostly it's the people we hold dear to our hearts. We are forever grateful for each of the people God placed in our path during our 4 year German adventure! I know for a fact we do NOT miss stairwell apartment living. Nor does Travis miss the drive along the B-50 every day. However, we'd still like to try to go back for one more tour in Europe...one day before Travis is done serving in the military. I guess we'll have to see what God has in store for us!

Episode 2: Transition to Texas! That took up the 2nd part of the year! ha! I still can't believe we're 1st time home buyers! We just love our little house in our cozy little cul-de-sac. There are some improvements we'd like to make over the next few years. But, all in all, we are so happy here. God has richly provided yet again! I am finding it hard to believe we just celebrated a White Christmas in Texas! I don't think we have had a white Christmas in quite a few years! I was hoping Texas would be warmer in the winter than it is this year...Ask me again in July when it's 110 outside! lol
Episode 3: Transition Home-school! (or as I like to call it: LIFE UPSIDE DOWN!) I am braving something I NEVER thought I'd do. I'm still not so sure it's going to be a 'forever' deal for me. But, we are learning and growing...A LOT! I think I am having more learning experiences than the kids...lol! There are so many of you who have prayed and encouraged me along the way and I am so grateful for each of you. Thank you! It makes all the difference to our family.

I guess that last note of thanks goes out to each of you who reads this blog. We are so thankful you take the time to keep up with us. If you have a blog yourself, we are thankful to be included in the little glimpses of life you give us! I love reading each of your stories. It helps me to feel not so far away, not so lonely on some of the days where I sometimes forget I am never alone. My God, my creator is always with me. However, He has given me an angel in each of you to keep me company as an Earthly reminder of His love. Thank you so much for being a part of our life. Our friends, our family, our Brothers and Sisters in Christ. We love you!
Here's to a Happy and Healthy 2010! Be blessed my friends!

Christmas Memories

It was the perfect night to go caroling. A bit of a frosty feeling in the air here in TX. We were off in the Minivan Mafia Attack Line to go spread Christmas Cheer at a few of the local nursing homes and some of the widows homes from our church. We got to the first Nursing Home. Sang our first set, and went on to the next room for set 2....We put Ashlynn in the front row although she was reluctant: A bit shy, a little tired from her nap still, she stayed put right where we set her. And we begin...."Hark the Herold....." silence....Someone from the front says, "umm Mary Beth, Ashlynn threw up!" Let me just say she was fine. She said, "I had a nervous belly for the people." A 3 y/o with stage fright....hmmmm...Anyhow she's fine and kicking this morning! I felt so bad we left such a present for the people in the nursing home. One of the gentlemen that lived there said, "I think someone left something behind." It was so funny! This is definitely one memory for all of Ferguson Christmas history!
